Having both lead characters be staunch in their outlook, even at the expense of conflict between them, actually makes them both better characters. In all this, by endangering Dante in the way it did and raising the stakes around his relationship with Robyn, The Equalizer episode 7 was able to build real suspense. It looks like we have a cat-and-mouse game in our future, with Dante pursuing Robyn to bring her to justice now that he believes the severity of her methods, even to save his life, outweigh the upsides of the good work she’s doing. The DA gunning for Robyn to crack down on vigilantism felt like it was heading in the usual direction, but coming away from the episode knowing that Dante is more likely to be an adversary than an ally gives it a welcome new spin. In that sense it marks a positive change in direction, one assumes into less obvious territory. This plays out like a bit of subversion, the show recognizing the expectations of its audience but still being willing to dash them. The Equalizer episode 7 says nada to that, though, putting them on the same page to track down a serial killer but also proving that their respective methods of achieving justice are completely incompatible. Queen Latifah and Tory Kittles have a lot of chemistry, and as their flirty banter has progressed, it really seemed like the show was setting up a long-term arrangement and possibly a romance. While Robyn contends with uncertainty at home, she is joined in her pursuit of justice by Melody “Mel” Bayani, an edgy bar owner and sniper from Robyn’s past and Harry Keshegian, a paranoid and brilliant white-hat hacker.Īs Robyn aids the oppressed and exploited, she sometimes works with Marcus Dante, an NYPD detective who once sought to uncover her identity, but now respects the need for Robyn’s type of justice even as he often questions her methods. Robyn’s clandestine work and her personal life collide when her smart and observant daughter, Delilah, and her aunt Vi, who lives with Robyn to help her balance life as a working mother, discover her secret career as a vigilante. But to a trusted few, she is The Equalizer – an anonymous guardian angel and defender of the downtrodden, who’s also dogged in her pursuit of personal redemption. McCall presents to most as an average single mom who is quietly raising her teenage daughter. The Equalizer is a reimagining of the classic series starring Academy Award® nominee and multi-hyphenate Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.
